Environment and Climate Change Resilience

Transforming Aquaculture and Food Systems, Unlocking the Blue Economy

Climate change is a significant challenge facing our planet, and it is important for us to take action to mitigate its impact. The Aquaculture and Blue Economy Consortium, we recognize the importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) as an integrated approach to managing the value chain ecosystem.

As part of our efforts to promote sustainability and reduce our carbon footprint, we have partnered with a Scandinavian Biogas company to recycle waste material from fish processing into biogas. This not only reduces waste but also provides a renewable energy source that contributes to a cleaner and more sustainable future.

Effective management of fish processing by-products plays a crucial role in minimizing waste and promoting sustainable practices. During fish processing, significant quantities of by-products such as heads, bones, guts, and shells are generated, accounting for a substantial portion of the whole fish. Sadly, these valuable by-products often go unused and end up as waste. However, there are various methods available to convert these by-products into valuable resources, thereby reducing food loss and waste.

One approach is the utilization of fish by-products for the production of value-added products. By employing techniques such as enzymatic or bacterial hydrolysis, fish waste can be transformed into fish silage—a liquid mixture rich in hydrolyzed proteins, lipids, minerals, and other nutrients. This fish silage serves as a versatile resource that can be readily digested by both terrestrial and aquatic animals. It offers an alternative to fish meals as a protein source for manufacturing animal rations, contributing to sustainable and abundant animal protein supplies. Additionally, fish silage can be utilized as an excellent fertilizer, promoting efficient nutrient recycling in agricultural systems.

Furthermore, the utilization of fish by-products aligns with innovative initiatives such as Blue Fashion, which combines sustainability, waste reduction, and support for fishing communities. Blue Fashion seeks to create fashion items using marine raw materials and by-products, providing bio-alternatives to traditional fashion industry products. For instance, fish skin leather, fish scales, and seaweed fabric can be transformed into clothing, necklaces, purses, and shoes. By embracing these sustainable alternatives, the fashion industry can reduce its environmental impact and support the resilience of marine ecosystems.

By implementing these strategies to optimize fish by-product utilization, we contribute to environmental preservation, resource efficiency, and climate change resilience. Our consortium recognizes the importance of responsible waste management and actively promotes the conversion of fish by-products into valuable resources, fostering a circular economy and sustainable practices within the aquaculture industry.
