This message from Principal Secretary Betsy N. at the Agriculture and Food Systems Transformation Summit, held in Nairobi on 7–9 October, captures why aquaculture must be central to Kenya’s food security, job creation and shared prosperity agenda.
Represented by our Chief Operations Officer, Kennedy Comba, The Aquaculture & Blue Economy Consortium (TAC) welcomed the summit’s focus on financing, digital infrastructure, research and inclusive enterprise development.
Three priorities stood out:
- Integrated value chains: Quality fingerlings and feed must connect with farmer capacity, processing, cold-chain infrastructure and reliable markets.
- Finance and investment readiness: Productive capacity alone is not enough. Businesses need stronger commercial linkages, reliable data and appropriate financing to attract capital and scale.
- Partnerships and innovation: Collaboration among government, research institutions, financial institutions and private enterprise is essential to translate knowledge and technology into practical solutions for farmers.
These priorities reflect TAC’s approach as both an aquaculture operator and an ecosystem enabler. Through our portfolio of businesses and partnerships, we connect critical parts of the value chain while working to strengthen market access, production visibility and investment readiness.
Our collaboration with institutions such as the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) OFFICIAL also underscores the importance of research and evidence in building a productive, commercially sustainable sector.
The opportunity is to bridge the capacity-to-capital gap; connecting productive enterprises with the technology, markets, partnerships and finance needed to grow.
For Kenya’s aquaculture sector to fulfil its potential, we must move beyond isolated interventions towards connected, investment-ready value chains that deliver more fish, stronger livelihoods and sustainable jobs for women and youth.
