We were pleased to be featured on Kenya Television Network (KTN), contributing to a national conversation on how aquaculture can evolve into a more coordinated and opportunity-driven sector within Kenya’s blue economy.

At the heart of this shift is a simple but critical question: who is participating and how are they accessing opportunity? Through initiatives such as YoungFish, there is a deliberate effort to bring young people especially girlsinto the sector, not only by building awareness, but by connecting them to practical skills, digital tools and real pathways into enterprise and employment.

The conversation also highlighted a key reality: the sector is not lacking activity, it is lacking alignment. While small-scale producers continue to drive much of Kenya’s fish supply, they often operate within fragmented systems, with limited access to finance and weak market linkages. Addressing this requires stronger coordination across policy, investment, skills development, and innovation.

Dr. Chrispine Nyamweya- Senior Research Scientist and Assistant Director at Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI)

With growing investment, policy support and international collaboration, aquaculture presents a strong pathway to strengthen food systems, create jobs and expand participation across the blue economy. The opportunity is clear what matters now is how effectively the ecosystem comes together to unlock it.
